Peking University, August 14, 2024: The 17th International Earth Science Olympiad is taking place in Beijing from August 8–16, 2024. This prestigious event brings together middle school students with a deep passion for earth sciences and offers a unique opportunity to hear from the next generation of earth science enthusiasts.
In this piece, let's get to know the inspiring journey of Song Wanting, who transitioned from being an Olympiad participant to pursuing a master’s degree in paleontology at Peking University.

Song Wanting’s journey in earth sciences began in high school when she first competed in the Earth Science Olympiad. Her path reflects her increasing interest in the subject, starting from her participation in the 2017 competition to her later involvement in organizing both national and international finals.
"My high school teacher encouraged me to participate in the International Earth Science Olympiad, even discussing it with my parents to get their support," Song recalls. Initially motivated by her teacher’s encouragement and her admiration for Peking University, Song gradually developed a deep love and appreciation for geology.

Reflecting on her experiences, Song highlighted how the Olympiad significantly enhanced her learning skills. "Covering the basics of my first two years of college in just 10 days was crucial for developing my rapid learning abilities and professionalism," she explained.
A pivotal moment in her earth science journey was a field trip to Liaoning Province during her first year at university, which solidified her commitment to the subject. "That experience was a turning point for me. It was the first time I truly grasped the discipline's allure," she shared.

Beyond her academic achievements, Song has been active in promoting earth sciences. She played a key role as an editor for the "Earth Science Quality Cultivation Series for Middle School Students," a book series designed to bridge the gap between secondary and university education in earth sciences.
Song also returned to her alma mater, Yichang No. 1 Middle School, to inspire students to pursue earth sciences, believing that scientists should lead efforts to make science more accessible and engaging.
"I hope participants can truly enjoy the competition," Song said in her message to future competitors. "Earth science is fascinating because it allows you to explore the history and current state of rocks during field trips, applying what you’ve learned while using a geological hammer to break open a rock."
She believes that the competition "will inspire students to make meaningful contributions to the field of earth sciences in the future."
